Still Fields - for solo soprano saxophone. Commissioned, premiered, and recorded by Alison Balcetis in January 2020.
I am fascinated by the beautiful and lyrical multiphonics that are possible on the soprano saxophone, and in this piece I wanted to explore creating melodic lines or chorales out of these multiphonics to create a very delicate and fragile atmosphere. Through close collaboration with, Alison Balcetis, we found multiphonics that worked to create these sonorous melodic phrases. From this, flickers of activity begin to emerge, but the tranquil melodicism still returns. Everything in this piece is centered around the multiphonics, their tone quality, the sonic remnants within the sounds, and their pitch materials which creates a distinct sound world for the piece to live in. Still Fields was premiered by Allison Balcetis in January 2020.
