neither together nor apart - for violin and piano. Premiered by Huw Watkins (piano) and Michael Foyle (violin) in London, UK in March 2018.
Neither together nor apart takes a relatively small amount of musical material and looks at from a variety of different angles, as if looking at a sculpture from different perspectives. The foundation of these materials is the humble cluster, yet when orchestrated differently — at the ends of the piano, in a high white-noise cluster in the piano, or as a lyrical melody — the cluster takes on drastically different characters. These diverse perspectives vary in the extremity of their differences – sometimes taking just a slightly different intervallic or rhythmic approach or occasionally generating new and quite contrasting material. This allows for sections of intensity, lyrical stasis, and melodic reflection to emerge throughout the piece. Neither together nor apart was premiered by Michael Foyle and Huw Watkins in March 2018 at the Royal Academy of Music.
