In Silhouette - for flute, cello, and percussion. Commissioned and premiered by the VICE Ensemble for a premiere Valencia, Spain in July 2022.
In Silhouette draws inspiration from the work of visual artist Norman Lewis. Lewis was an American abstract expressionist painter, and in his Composition in Blue and Black, Lewis juxtaposes very clear, sharp black lines with hazy black clouds that fade to wisps of blue. There is a bit of an optical illusion looking at this painting; on one hand the haziness seems to emanate from the lines, while on the other hand the lines are an outgrowth from the clouds. When I look at this painting, there is a beautiful elusiveness as I attempt to grasp at stability or as I attempt to focus and fix my attention in one certain area. In Silhouette takes elements of the experience of this painting as a starting point; the sharp contrasts in direct vs. hazy materials provide an elusiveness that is never quite stabilized.
